What makes a competition spray tan different?
A competition spray tan is engineered for one environment: high-intensity stage lighting at distance. It is several shades darker than a cosmetic tan, applied in multiple hand-layered coats over 24 to 48 hours, and finished so shadows fall exactly where your conditioning put them. Where our everyday custom airbrush tan is blended to disappear into your skin tone, a stage tan is blended to survive the lights — even coverage around posing-suit lines, no streaks across striations, no green or muddy cast on camera.
How do base coats and show-day timing work?
Stage color is built in layers, on a schedule that works backward from your division's stage time:

48 hours out — first base coat. Freshly exfoliated, final-shaved skin takes the first layer. It develops overnight into the foundation shade.

The evening before — second coat. Depth doubles, suit lines are blended, and problem zones — elbows, knees, hands, feet — are detailed by hand.

Show morning — final check. Touch-ups where you slept on it, a finishing pass if your look calls for it, and guidance on glaze so you walk out polished, not greasy.

Which shows do Northern Virginia athletes tan for?
The Mid-Atlantic NPC calendar runs practically year-round, with roughly seven NPC and IFBB Pro League contests inside a 40-minute radius of our Falls Church studio — spring contests like the NPC Virginia Classic, the summer NPC/IFBB DC Pro-Am, Maryland shows through the fall, and November's championship run, including the Ben Weider Pro-Am right in Alexandria. If your federation card says VA, MD, or DC, your show-week tan is a local drive, not a logistics problem.

Competition tan questions, answered
How dark should a competition spray tan be?
Several shades darker than anything you would wear on the street. Stage lighting is brutally bright and flattens untanned muscle into a silhouette — judges literally cannot score definition they cannot see. A competition tan is built in layered coats to a depth that looks extreme in the mirror and exactly right under the lights.
When should I schedule my competition tan before a show?
Base coats go on 24 to 48 hours before you step on stage — typically one layer two days out and a second the evening before — with a final check the morning of the show. Book 2 to 3 weeks ahead of your show date; peak weekends around regional NPC contests fill fast, and your timing gets locked to your division’s stage time.
Why can’t I just use a booth tan or self-tanner for stage?
Booths and retail self-tanners cannot build the depth stage lighting demands, and they streak over dry, depleted peak-week skin. A hand-airbrushed competition tan is layered evenly around your posing suit lines, blended by an artist who can see and correct in real time, and finished to accentuate — not flatten — the conditioning you spent months building.
How should I prep my skin during peak week?
Exfoliate thoroughly 24 hours before your first coat, with extra attention to elbows, knees, and ankles. Do your last shave at that same session, then arrive with nothing on your skin — no lotion, no deodorant, no glaze products. Hydrated, freshly exfoliated skin takes color evenly; peak-week dryness is the number one cause of patchy stage tans.
