Before your tan

Before your tan

Preparation decides half of how good a spray tan looks. Get these right and the airbrush does the rest.

How do I prepare for a spray tan?

Shower, exfoliate, and shave 12–24 hours before your appointment, then arrive with completely bare skin — no lotion, deodorant, makeup, or perfume, all of which block DHA from developing evenly. Finish any waxing 48 hours out and manicures beforehand. Wear loose, dark clothing to leave in. At Sunkiss Studios in Falls Church, every session starts with a pH-balancing prep spray, so your only job is arriving clean and product-free.

What should I wear to a spray tan appointment?

Wear loose, dark, breathable clothing — an oversized dress or joggers — and skip tight leggings, snug bra bands, and socks, which can press lines into developing color. During the session, most clients wear whatever they are comfortable in: old swimwear, underwear, or nothing at all. Sandals beat sneakers in warm weather. Your Sunkiss Studios artist steps out while you change and keeps the studio fully private throughout.

What happens at my first spray tan appointment?

Your first visit to Sunkiss Studios begins with a consultation: your artist assesses your skin tone and undertone, discusses the depth you want, and blends a custom formula. After a pH-balancing prep spray, the airbrush application takes about fifteen minutes, sprayed entirely by hand, with a finishing powder to set it. The whole appointment runs about thirty minutes, and you leave with exact rinse timing and aftercare instructions.

Is it safe to get a spray tan while pregnant?

DHA, the active ingredient, is approved for topical cosmetic use and is not absorbed through skin in meaningful amounts, so most physicians consider spray tanning low-risk during pregnancy — but always confirm with your own doctor first, especially in the first trimester. At Sunkiss Studios we add precautions for expecting clients: nose filters, good ventilation, and gentler fragrance-free solution options on request.

Do guys get spray tans?

Constantly. A meaningful share of Sunkiss Studios clients are men — DC-area professionals wanting a subtle “just back from vacation” look, grooms before weddings, and athletes before competitions. A men’s session works exactly the same way: custom-blended color matched to your skin tone, applied with a lighter hand for a natural result rather than an obvious tan. Body hair is no obstacle; the fine mist reaches skin easily.

Does spray tanning work on dark skin?

Beautifully. A custom spray tan on deeper skin tones is not about adding darkness — it is about evening tone and adding a warm, lit-from-within glow. Because every Sunkiss Studios formula is blended per client, we match your undertone precisely rather than forcing one house solution on everyone, which is where booths and chains go wrong. Deep, fair, olive, or anywhere between: the blend adapts to you.

Aftercare

Aftercare

The first 24 hours set your color; the week after decides how gracefully it wears.

How long after a spray tan can I shower?

With our Signature Custom tan, wait 8–12 hours before your first rinse. With the Rapid Signature, you can shower in just 2–4 hours — the color keeps developing after you rinse. Either way, make that first shower brief, lukewarm, and soap-free: you are rinsing off cosmetic bronzer, not your tan. Some brown color washing down the drain is completely normal and does not mean you have lost anything.

What is the full aftercare routine for a spray tan?

For the first 24 hours, stay dry — no workouts, rain, or dishwashing without gloves — and wear loose clothing. After your first rinse, moisturize twice daily with an oil-free lotion, take short lukewarm showers, and pat rather than rub your skin dry. Avoid exfoliants, retinol, and acne acids, which eat color. Every Sunkiss Studios session ends with a printed aftercare card, so you never have to guess.

How do I fix a patchy spray tan?

Light patchiness usually blends out: exfoliate the darker area gently with a damp washcloth in circular motions, then moisturize the surrounding skin. For spots that under-developed, a gradual tanning lotion feathers color back in. If a tan from elsewhere went truly wrong, do not scrub yourself raw — Sunkiss Studios in Falls Church can strip and re-blend, and hand airbrushing prevents patchiness in the first place.

Can I pair red light therapy with a spray tan?

Yes — in the right order. Do red light therapy before your spray tan, or wait at least 24 hours after, since sessions usually involve wiping down and sweating, which can disturb developing color. Red light itself does not bleach DHA color the way UV fades a natural tan. Many Sunkiss Studios clients schedule red light earlier in the day, then come to Falls Church for their spray.

Longevity

Longevity

A custom tan should fade the way it arrived — evenly. Here is what controls the clock.

How long does a spray tan last?

A professional custom airbrush tan lasts 7–10 days with good aftercare: the most even color runs from day one through day seven, followed by a gradual, natural fade. Longevity depends on preparation, skin hydration, and how often you swim or sweat. Sunkiss Studios clients in Falls Church routinely report nine-day wear, because a formula matched to your skin chemistry fades cleaner than a one-size booth solution.

How do I make my spray tan last longer?

Moisturize religiously — hydrated skin holds DHA color for days longer than dry skin. Take short, lukewarm showers with a sulfate-free wash, pat dry, and avoid exfoliants, retinol, chlorine, and long soaks. Wear loose clothing the first day. A hydration-finish add-on at Sunkiss Studios seals color at application, and a gradual tan-extending lotion from day three keeps the fade slow and even.

Will chlorine or the pool ruin my spray tan?

Chlorine is your tan’s biggest enemy after exfoliation — it lifts DHA color with every swim. A quick dip will not erase your tan, but daily hour-long pool sessions will fade it noticeably faster. Rinse off immediately after swimming and moisturize right after. Heading somewhere with a pool? Sunkiss Studios recommends booking your session one to two days before departure, so you travel fully developed.

Why do spray tans turn orange?

Orange happens when DHA concentration is too high for someone’s skin tone, or when the solution’s base clashes with their undertone — the classic one-size-fits-all booth problem. Fair, cool-toned skin sprayed with a warm, dark solution goes brassy. Sunkiss Studios prevents this by hand-blending every formula: we assess your undertone in consultation and choose violet- or brown-based solutions accordingly, which is why our clients simply do not go orange.

Pricing & booking

Pricing & booking

Published prices, no surprises. Here is what custom work costs and why it beats the booth.

How much does a spray tan cost?

At Sunkiss Studios in Falls Church, a Signature Custom airbrush tan is $79, the faster-rinse Rapid Signature is $99, the tan-line-free Brazilian Tan is $99, and the Photo-Ready Contour session is $119 — and the Five Signature pack ($345 for five tans) brings the per-tan price to $69. Nationally, custom studio tans run $69–$95 in premium metros, while automated booths cost around $30 but cannot blend for your skin. Memberships from $65 per month bring the per-tan cost down significantly.

What is a rapid spray tan?

A rapid spray tan uses an accelerated DHA formula that lets you rinse in 2–4 hours instead of 8–12 — and the color keeps deepening for about 24 hours after that first shower. It is ideal before same-evening events, or when you would rather not sleep in a developing tan. The Rapid Signature at Sunkiss Studios is $99 and lasts as long as our standard tan; only the rinse window changes.

What is the difference between a booth spray tan and a custom airbrush tan?

A booth sprays one pre-mixed solution in a fixed pattern at every body that walks in. A custom airbrush tan is applied by an artist who blends the formula for your undertone, adjusts technique for your body’s contours, and works evenly around shoulders, curves, and knees, where machines streak. That is the entire premise of Sunkiss Studios: your tan is designed and sprayed by a person, never a machine.

Mobile & events

Mobile & events

Weddings, vacations, and stage days run on timelines. Build the tan into yours.

How many days before my wedding should I get a spray tan?

Two days before the wedding is the sweet spot: color fully developed, first rinse behind you, and no transfer risk to a white dress. Book a trial three to four weeks ahead so your artist can perfect your blend in advance. The Sunkiss Studios Bride Plan ($199) includes exactly that — a trial session plus a wedding-week rapid tan — and our Bridal Party package covers the bride and four attendants.

When should I get a spray tan before vacation?

Book one to two days before departure. That gives your tan time to fully develop and get through its first rinse before you fly, so you land already glowing instead of spending the first beach days building color. Falls Church and DC-area clients often book Sunkiss Studios’ Rapid Signature the day before an early flight, since its 2–4-hour rinse window fits even tight pre-trip schedules.

How does a competition spray tan work?

Stage tans are a separate discipline: multiple coats of high-DHA solution applied over a 24–48-hour timeline — base coat two days out, top coat the night before, touch-ups the morning of the show. Color that looks extreme in person reads perfectly defined under stage lighting. Sunkiss Studios works with NPC and IFBB competitors across Virginia, Maryland, and DC, with mobile sessions available for show-week timing.
